SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has called for huge crowds to come out and march for Marriage Equality at Belfast's City Hall at 1pm today (Saturday 18 May).
The SDLP European candidate proposed the first motion calling for Marriage Equality to achieve a majority in the Assembly.
He said: “Achieving equality for and an end to discrimination against our LGBT+ community is the civil rights calling of this generation.
“On International Day Against Homobobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, it’s important to reflect on the significant challenges faced by the LGBT+ community. Discrimination in access to health services, the impact of hate crime, bullying on the basis of sexual orientation in our schools. We have an immense amount of work to do to create a fairer society.
“On Saturday, people across Northern Ireland will have the opportunity to come together and express their support for our LGBT+ community at the march for marriage. We must all stand together to deliver a powerful message of hope and acceptance to our LGBT+ friends and family, young and old, that the love they share is as equal as any other. People can do that by coming together on Saturday and standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with this community.
“I have tabled a bold proposal to break the logjam at Stormont by suspending the Petition of Concern - the mechanism which has been used to abuse people’s rights. We will table a Marriage Equality bill immediately and deliver for the LGBT+ community. The SDLP is hard at work, we want to deliver an inclusive government with an ambitious programme for change. This is a priority for us.
