The clothing retailer, Peacocks, is to close it's Derry store as it becomes the latest victim of the recession.

The Waterloo Place store will close with immediate effect, making all staff redundant.

Peacocks will close 19 shops across Northern Ireland with the loss of more than 250 jobs. 10 stores will remain open, including shops in Limavady and Strabane, saving some 140 jobs.

Peacocks went into administration after Christmas and was bought over by Scottish firm, Edinburfh Woolen Mill.

Peacocks insiders say the firm had suffered from a drop in consumer spending due to the tough economic conditions caused by the recession.
