3,000 homes in Derry left without electricity after cable damage

Around 3,000 homes and businesses in Derry were left in the dark today after widespread power cuts.

The power cuts happened just after noon and affected the Steelstown, Shantallow and Gransha areas of the city. Northside Shopping Centre in Shantallow remained opened but most retailers couldn't accept customers as tills were down.

It was thought by many that the torrential downpours that brought flooding to many streets across Derry but NIE confirmed that the cuts had been brought about by cable damage.

"Damage to an underground electricity cable by a third party caused the problem," said an NIE spokesperson. "Emergency repair teams from NIE, the electricity network company, responded immediately to isolate the damaged cable and restore power to customers via alternative network circuits."

All power supplies had been restored just after 2pm.
