Following news that the ICU was full up this week, Altnagelvin has activated its 'low surge' plan to create additional beds in ICU to deal with Covid cases. Sinéad McLaughlin MLA said: "Following yesterday’s news, I met with the Western Trust and they have confirmed that Altnagelvin has activated their low surge plan to extend ICU bed capacity to 12. They currently have 2 beds free.If needed, they will be able to activate medium surge (15 beds) on Friday. Their high surge plan would then extend this to 18 beds. The new regulations aren’t easy, but please keep in mind that our healthcare workers are sacrificing their physical and mental health to cope with rising admissions. By sticking to the rules, we can reduce the spread and reduce the stress that staff are under.
