Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan has written to the Department of Education asking them to explore providing free sanitary products in schools across the north.
The party’s Education spokesperson said:
“The rising costs in sanitary products has an impact on many girls attending school – many are forced to use alternative methods as they simply cannot afford sanitary products.
“A survey carried out by Plan International in 2017 found that a staggering 49 percent of girls have missed a full day at school because they could not afford period products.
“This is unacceptable in today’s society. I have written to the Department of Education asking them to explore the roll-out of free sanitary products for girls in schools across the north.
“I believe this can help remove the stress and anxiety placed on girls when attending schools during their period, help them focus on their studies, and reduce absence from school.”
