SDLP Health Spokesperson, Colin McGrath has called on the Minister for Health to bring forward a package of support for the families of nurses who suffer death in service from Coronavirus.
The South Down MLA said: “I was shocked to hear from the RCN today at Health Committee that Northern Ireland does not have a support package in place for families of nurses, who suffer death in service as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, this is the case in England, Scotland and Wales, but nurses in the North are left behind. This is unacceptable."
“Nurses were the front line. They stood up when we needed them most. They put themselves in harm's way to protect all of us.
“While every effort should be made to protect our staff, by ensuring adequate PPE, a financial package should be in place to provide vital support, should a nurse lose their life as a result of COVID-19. It would help support their family in their time of need."
"The knowledge that such a fund would be in place would certainly help nurses to feel that their employers are truly concerned about them and will look out for their family should the worst happen.”
“I would urge the Minister for Health and Minister for Finance to develop this fund and support stream as soon as possible.’
