SDLP Foyle MLA, Colum Eastwood, has said that those who perpetrated bombings in Derry last week stand in opposition to our city and country. Mr Eastwood says that the ideas and actions of dissident republicans stand in direct opposition to the clear aspirations of the Irish people.

"The attacks on the city and the people of Derry last week continue to generate a widespread and deep anger. It is an anger wholly justified.

"These dissidents, their actions and ideas, stand in complete opposition to all the peoples of Ireland. As witnessed last week the consequences of their mindlessness have disrupted the life of Derry, in particular causing misery to dozens of elderly residents.

"The message coming from all our representatives in Derry is, and must be, that their campaign will not succeed. They are entitled to disagree with the democratic voice of the Irish people but they are not entitled to violently oppose us.

"The mechanism to defeat these people is not to bow to their tactic of intimidation and fear. It is rather to show that democracy works, that we are capable of bringing a better quality of life to the people of Derry and Ireland.

"In the day that is in it, with the news of the Ulster Council’s decision on the Fleadh, this is a message which will I hope will cause many to pause and reconsider. Events such as the Fleadh, an expression of the inclusivity and vibrancy of Irish identity, are precisely the events which should juxtapose with the nihilistic agenda of the dissidents.’
