Social housing provision in Derry has been declared to be ‘at crisis point’ after latest figures on waiting lists were revealed this week.
The Minister for Social Development was asked to provide figures on how many people in the Foyle constituency were currently on the Housing Executive waiting list.
As of the 1st October 2014, there were 3,316 applicants on the waiting list in the Foyle Parliamentary constituency, of which 2,298 were in housing stress.
Commenting on the figures, Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Councillor Tony Hassan said the figures confirmed what he had been saying in recent weeks about the state of the housing crisis in Derry.
He said a radical overhaul of housing provision was needed, as well as the building of thousands of new homes.
