SDLP Deputy Leader and Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has said the message must be clear that the public must wear a face covering when in enclosed spaces where social distancing cannot be maintained.
The SDLP Minister said: “There has been some confusion over the use of face coverings. To be clear the Executive agreed to the Health Minister’s recommendation, in line with the advice from the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific Advisor, to make the use of face coverings mandatory in enclosed public settings where social distancing cannot be maintained.
“By taking this power, this agreement means the public must wear a face covering from August 1st and that enforcement may commence from 20th August following engagement with the public on the benefits of using a face covering. Exemptions will apply.
“98,000 vulnerable people who are shielding will be out and alongside us at the end of this month. We must do everything we can to protect them. All those not exempt must wear a face covering. We must look out for each other and act to keep each other safe from covid-19.”
