The Health Minister has announced further restrictions on public gatherings to combat a second wave of the Coronavirus.
Announcing that the ‘R’ number has now gone above 1 again, and currently stands at 1.3, he has condemned those who have ignored the need for facecoverings and social distancing as ‘armchair experts’ who believe that, unlike the health authorities, they are ‘overnight experts on the virus’.
As a result, indoor and outdoor public gatherings will be reduced from 30 people to 15 people.
As a second result, from next week meetings in private dwellings will now be reduced to 6 people from 2 households.
The PSNI will also be focusing on ‘hotspot areas’ where social distancing has been neglected, including pubs and similar gathering points.
The Chief Medical Officer added that the virus crisis is far from over, and that all these decisions have not been taken lightly.
