SDLP Mental Health Spokesperson, Cara Hunter MLA has welcomed the publication of the Mental Health Action Plan by Minister for Health, Robin Swann.
The East Derry MLA said: “I warmly welcome the publication of the Mental Health Action Plan. Action on mental health has been a priority for the SDLP for several years and in the talks process earlier this year, we called for a Junior Minister to be appointed for Mental Health.”
“The Minister for Health has made mental health a personal priority, announcing a Mental Health Champion, and this is very welcome. The Executive have also set up a working group on mental health and wellbeing, taking into account the fact it impacts all walks of life and cuts across many Government Departments.”
“As well as publishing the Mental Health Action Plan, Minister Swann reaffirmed his commitment to bringing forward a Mental Health Strategy by the end of the year. It is critical that this strategy is underpinned with the funding needed to transform our mental health services, invest in wellbeing and the legacy of the past.”
“A few weeks ago, I wrote to Minister Swann asking him to consider a pandemic investment in mental health and bereavement services, acknowledging the strain COVID-19 has put on those who have lost loved ones and are unable to grieve in the normal way.”
“As the newly appointed SDLP MLA for East Derry, I look forward to working with Minister Swann and colleagues right across the Assembly Chamber to ensure our people are healthy and if they need it, they can access world class mental health services.”
