Justice Committee Vice-Chair Raymond McCartney MLA has today spoken out to condemn recent activity by armed gangs in the Derry and Strabane region.

Mr McCartney said there can be no doubt where responsibility lies in the event of casualties, if these devices explode.

Mr McCartney said: “I note with alarm the statements released by an armed gang masquerading as Republicans claiming responsibility for leaving bombs in residential areas of both Derry and Strabane in the past week. It was fortunate that nobody was either killed or injured in either of these incidents. But let’s be clear that if one of these devices explode resulting in death or injury then the responsibility is clearly with those leaving them in residential areas.

“And the implied threat in this gang’s statements to local people, public representatives and community workers who helped inform residents about the threat to their safety is despicable and should be lifted immediately.

“There is no justification for any of the activities of these gangs. They should disband immediately and allow our communities to work towards building an equal and agreed Ireland for all through entirely peaceful means.”
