Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin has welcomed environment minister Edwin Poots’ statement suggesting that the Mobuoy waste dump be remediated in ways that provide a positive legacy. The minister was responding to a series of written questions submitted by McLaughlin. She said: “I remain extremely concerned about the Mobuoy waste dump and the recognised threat to water quality and River Faughan wildlife. It is essential that faster progress is made to remediate the site and I regret that the minister has rejected an Assembly resolution passed in 2014 calling for a public inquiry into the circumstances related to Mobuoy. “I will monitor future activity regarding Mobuoy closely. It is essential that consultants and other contractors engaged to determine the future of Mobuoy have appropriate and proven expertise, as well as the financial standing to undertake the work at the level of excellence required. I hope that Mobuoy can one day be used for recreational and leisure purposes."
