Residents in Galliagh have been warned to be vigilant after reports of reckless driving in the area.

SDLP Derry City councillor Jimmy Carr said incidents have occurred in recent nights and, on one occasion, he said an elderly lady and her daughter were reportedly involved in a near miss.

Cllr Carr said: “Last week, we had a serious incident regarding young men driving around recklessly over the green belt areas cutting up the grass. The car was that dirty - covered in muck - that people couldn't even tell what type of car it was.

“This has been occurring for a number of nights, however, last Thursday night in particular an elderly lady and her daughter where reportedly almost knocked down. It was, from what I understand, a very near miss. The incident has been reported to the PSNI and I also have contacted police in an effort track down the vehicle and those who were behind the wheel.

“I am appealing to anyone who has seen the vehicle, or knows its whereabouts to contact myself or the police immediately.

“We have had incidents in the past in and around the same area when a pedestrian lost their life. We cannot allow this to happen again. It could be your son or daughter next.”
