At a meeting yesterday (Thursday 01/04) Donegal County Council turned down the planning application for a controversial asphalt facility at the foot of Scalp Mountain near Burnfoot.
The decision has been welcomed by SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins, who said it will be a great relief for the residents of Muff and Culmore.
The proposal for the asphalt plant, at Barr’s Pit quarry, between Burnfoot and Muff, was submitted to Donegal County Council by Moyle Plant Limited a year ago.
The community living in the area lodged 47 objections to the planning application.
Local people on both sides of the border were concerned about the potentially harmful effects of chemicals emitted from the asphalt plant. Symptoms reported by workers in other asphalt plants include irritation of the upper respiratory tract, headache, fatigue, wheezing and shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.
