Portstewart Primary School has remained closed today due to an outbreak of gastroenteritis that has affected 60 of the 200 pupils and staff.

On the advice of the Department of Education a deep clean will take place today to eradicate the bug, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting. Gastroenteritis is highly contagious and can be transmitted through contact with an infected person or contaminated food and drink.

Although it is hoped that the school will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday), parents have been asked to keep their children home until they have been symptom-free for 48 hours
