Recent protests have definitely affected tourism, especially into NI through Belfast, Derry City Centre Traders’ spokesman Martin McCrossan said today.
"There is no question. People view Northern Ireland as their destination, not just Derry, and most visitors arrive in Ireland through either Belfast or Dublin - so events in Belfast are certainly going to have a knock-on effect, not just on tourism, but on retail as well," he said.
"The longer these protests continue, the greater they will continue as a detriment to tourism in general. The people I sympathise with are my business colleagues in Belfast, who are suffering much more than we here in the North-West.
"However it is important to emphasise to potential visitors that there has been no violence here in Derry. We have an excellent range of hotels, bed and breakfasts and restaurants to offer visitors and that is the message we have got to put across," he said.
