SDLP MLA for West Tyrone Joe Byrne has called on the Minister for Employment and Learning to take action on gender equality in the workforce.
Mr Byrne asked an oral question to Minister Stephen Farry which called on the Minister to take the initiative on gender equality immediately rather than waiting for gender equality strategy to emerge from the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister. Mr Byrne said:
“Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the death of a suffragette activist at the Derby. I felt it was important to challenge the Minister to take bold and decisive action on gender equality in the workforce now, rather than waiting for a strategy from the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister.”
“For too long, the Executive has been talking a good game on gender equality but we are still waiting for action. It’s time to consider bold and affirmative action on this very important issue.”
