Sinn Féin MLA Orlaithi Flynn has welcomed confirmation that a specially-accredited unit has been set up in Belfast City Hospital to ensure women from the north who have been injured as a result of vaginal mesh implants can access medical support and treatment.
The West Belfast MLA said: “News that a specially-accredited unit has been set up in Belfast City Hospital to deal with injury resulting from vaginal mesh implants is to be welcomed.
“Local women will now be able to go directly to dedicated clinicians who will assess their problems and where appropriate, they will be referred to have the mesh removed.
"Sinn Féin has long argued for access to treatment for women injured by mesh. We have been in continuous engagement with affected women and the Department of Health and we are glad the department has now moved on its assurances to establish the unit.
“It is now essential that the department moves forward with additional measures regarding diagnostic testing and removes any barriers to treatment. It is my hope that this unit will also provide the full range of support services these women require.
"At all times the department must listen to and act in the interests of these brave women.
“It is also important that action is taken to protect women from future injury.
“Sinn Féin has consistently called for a moratorium on the use of vaginal mesh implants until the facts are established.”
