The Northern Ireland Secretary of State Theresa Villiers has expressed her support for Mark Durkan MP's campaign for a 'City Deal' for Derry and is also very positive about the expansion of Magee.
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan revealed her support after a meeting with Ms. Villiers in Westminster yesterday to press the case for the ‘City Deal’.
A ‘City Deal’ is a UK-wide government initiative which aims to help a city or region boost investment, promote growth and create jobs.
Mr Durkan, who is also meeting the Shadow NI Secretary of State Ivan Lewis on Monday to discuss the matter, said:
“This was a very worthwhile meeting in which Theresa Villiers confirmed that both Whitehall and Treasury would look positively at proposals for a new City Deal for Derry if they are made.
“She stressed that if the devolved authorities in Northern Ireland come forward with agreements around a City Deal she was confident her colleagues and Treasury would want to be supportive.
“She was also very positive about the case for university expansion at Magee and the economic difference that it would make to Derry.
“I will also be speaking to Ivan Lewis on Monday at Westminster who has been very supportive of the City Deal concept for Derry – having already provided contacts of his Labour Party colleagues in Manchesterwho have been involved in the City Deal process.”
