Derry~Londonderry teenager and YouTube star, TheNewAdamBeales99 (Adam Beales), will join a host of other renowned vloggers for an one-off content creators day on March 30, as part of the Creativity Month 2018 programme.
Over 200 young people will come together for the event in Nerve Centre, which also features the UK’s biggest YouTubers Jake Mitchell, MillieT, and Lee Hinchcliffe. With a combined online following of more than 3.5 million people, they’ll bring the audience ‘behind the scenes’ and give top tips and practical advice on making it as a digital content creator.
Creativity Month is an initiative of the Department for Communities, in partnership with Culture Northern Ireland and the Nerve Centre. This year’s programme highlights skills and careers in the creative industries and will feature more than 150 events in 50 venues across the region.
Laura Livingstone, Head of production at Ntropic, a VFX & Creative Content studio with offices in LA, New York and San Francisco will lead ‘Create Your Career’ at the Market Place Theatre on March 6. Originally from Armagh, Laura has previously worked on the visual effects for Iron Man 2 and with such as Facebook, Ebay and Apple.
For the fifth consecutive year, South West College in Enniskillen will host NICHE (Northern Ireland Creative & High Tech Expo) on March 20, bringing together animators, virtual reality and 3D and VFX artists for a day of networking and learning.
The programme also encourages people of all ages to get creative. Fab:Social in Shantallow in Derry~Londonderry is opening every Friday in March, allowing people to get hands-on with the latest digital fabrication equipment such as 3D printers and laser and vinyl cutters. Whilst Raspberry Jam NI are encouraging people to try out computer programming for free at Queen’s University, Belfast.
From March 3 - 31, the Midtown Makers Studio in Ballymena will run a series of craft workshops from wire work, needle felting to hand-stitching.
‘Idea Jam’ at Farset Labs, Belfast invites creators, designers and developers to hone their ideas and prepare a pitch that will bring them to the next level.
Families are well catered for with a wide range of events and fun workshops, from Belfast Children’s Festival (9-14 March), Arts and Crafts on HMS Caroline (March 30 – April 2), to Penguins, a new award-winning theatre and dance production in the Roe Valley Arts Centre (March 15 & 16).
Another family highlight is the Little Inventors exhibition in Derry~Londonderry which will showcase the ingenious, fantastical, funny or perfectly practical invention ideas from young primary school children that have been turned into real objects in the Nerve Centre FabLab.
Speaking at the launch of the Creativity Month programme, Joe Carlin, Creativity Month co-ordinator, said: 'Creativity Month is about showcasing the diversity of Northern Ireland’s creative industries and to stimulate new thinking across government, business, education and the community and voluntary sector.
With so many fantastic regional events, most of which are free or low cost, it allows people of all ages to try out new creative experiences. From the Street Art Pop-Up Festival in Derry~Londonderry, the Female Entrepreneurs Conference in Ballymena to the Imagination Lab in Newry - the only limit is your imagination!’
The Department for Communities Director of Culture, Joanna McConway, said: ‘Continued investment in the Creative Industries through a high profile showcase opportunity such as Creativity Month will have a significantly positive impact on the Department’s key priorities as the events will be specifically targeted at promoting the opportunities that the creative industries bring to communities across NI.
The theme for this years’ initiative is focused around “Raising awareness about careers in the creative sector” and Creativity Month 2018 is an appropriate vehicle to help inform, inspire and motivate young people to consider their future possibilities. This year, events during March will provide numerous opportunities for young people to interact with creative industry professionals where they can gain a genuine insight into different job roles’.
