World-renowned classical concert pianist Cathal Breslin has flown in from the United States to perform a free concert tonight (Sunday 23rd) at Magee University to launch his Walled City Classical Music concert series.

Cathal will take to the stage at the Great Hall in Magee tonight to kick off a monthly series of classical performances linked to his highly successful Walled City Music Festival, which saw the likes of James Galway and the Kronos Quartet enthrall Derry audiences during the summer.

Cathal, from the Culmore Road in the city, has had a long and successful career which has taken him to every country in the world. He has sold out New York’s famed Carnegie Hall twice, and toured extensively. He has performed for presidents and princes and recorded many CDs.

Cathal says Sunday night’s piano Recital is entitled ‘Poetry, Folk Music and the Divine’. Billed as a celebration of three anniversaries of famous pianists - Liszt (200 years), Percy Grainger (100 years), and Philip Hammond (60th Birthday).

“The program of music includes romantic poetry, Irish folk music arrangements, including Danny Boy,” says Cathal. “I’ll have new Irish folk music arrangements of Bunty's music by Philip Hammond written especially for me, Hungarian folk music; and Liszt Sonata in the second half, which depicts divine intervention and the temptations of the devil. The Liszt Sonata is like a graphic battle between heaven and hell--and of course heaven wins.

“I am really looking forward to coming home and performing in Derry again. There’s always a great buzz about Derry.”
The concert, which starts at 7pm, takes place tonight, October 23rd at the Great Hall in Magee. Admission is free.
